Your pompous photography
the orange flourishes
on juhu beach
and chowpatty sands
are only
your desperate attempts to
show you've progressed ,
done better than your dad
ever could think of .

It's an age of upstarts.

What i feel for you
is close to pity
but
far from empathy.
The Bom Bahiya
of the portuguese
has been kind to you
and why not?
(Bombay toh kisiko bhuka nahi sulata hai nah!)

Don't look for me
in the koli fisherwomen
i don't smell of crab
(i'm only a cancerian)
or pomfret.
Don't sell your story
to wannabe journalists
in the dim light
of their cheap flats.
They don't want your story
they just like
genes that transmit
good looks.

Slumdog tales don't sell
it's the brilliance of
british film making
that fetch nominations
the problems
in Colaba and Mazegaon
remain as they were.

she'll laugh at your story
you fool
in her cabin
so go
do what you
do best
play!

p.s. this is to inform deya & beadysea that this is utterly random. so no worries. and bombay could have been pune or Goa, just that i'm reading Rushdie & loving it.

the beauty of this poem lies in the narration, not the images. the slightly dispassionate and mocking tone gives the poem the power it needs.

beautiful.
